Sarah Catherine “Kate” Emert, daughter of Peter Robert and Mary Angelina (Tyson) Emert was born March 16, 1898 in Athens, TX.  She was the 5th of 9 children and the first to be born in Texas.

Her parents met in Emert’s Cove  where her father was teaching and they were married February 25, 1887 in Sevierville, Sevier County, TN.  They moved to Athens TX in 1896 and from there to Madison County, Elwood community about 6 miles from Midway, TX.

Kate married widower George Walter Catoe on May 27, 1917 at Midway, TX. She was 19 and he was 34. She became stepmother to Travis, age 11, Wilma, age 10 and Bernice, age 7. Between then and 1929 she had 6 children.  In 1935 her husband was killed by a hit and run driver as the family was leaving church. He died the next day, August 1st, and is buried in Allphin Cemetery in Madison County, TX. Kate was 37 and left with with 6 children ages 17 thru 6.

After all the children were grown, Kate moved to Houston, TX and lived with her unmarried daughter, Ruby. She collected postcards, especially County Court houses, maintained a large decorative garden, crocheted, made her own clothing and made quilts. Most Sundays some or all of her children would visit for supper, with the women assisting in the cooking and clean up. I remember as a child knowing I was supposed to spend time with Grandma looking at the garden, any new postcards she had received and progress whatever project she was currently working on. Then we could help ourselves to the cookie jar and play with our cousins.
